Different jobs call for different specifications and different densities of materials. The Quality Control lab tests all materials and designs the asphalt mixture used on our jobs to ensure the material and the mix being used are up to the standards established by The Shelly Company and the customer for whom the job is being performed.
On Thursday September 28, 2006, several representatives from the Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois Departments of Transportation and representatives from the Federal Highway Administration visited Shelly Materials Plant #90 in Columbus to see our new asphalt sampler. Despite a rainy day, it was a very successful tour. Everyone was impressed with the sampler, the plant, and the Shelly Materials operation.
This new device now provides a safe, simple and cost effective method to extract a representative sample from a loaded truck. Last year, The Shelly Company Quality Control Lab partnered with HMA Lab Supply to design the unit pictured below. While other vendors offer a similar unit for approximately $30,000, the Shelly/HMA engineered sampler cost less than $10,000 to design and build. Thus far, the new sampler has been a huge success.
Future plans include additional fixed installation of sampler units at our high volume plants as well as the design of a portable unit that can be used at any of our plants throughout Ohio. |

Special thanks to following people for making sure the sampler was ready and operational: JD List, Paul Dillon, Mike Sroufe, Todd Adcock, William Saum, and all Plant #90 personnel.
