Our Nation has relied heavily on Guard and Reserve Service members since entering continuous operations more than 14 years ago. Employer support enhances retention rates in the Armed Forces and, in the end, strengthens our national security. To recognize employers who support their Guard and Reserve employees, ESGR grants a series of Department of Defense awards. On Nov 14, Russell Sherman, Shelly Northeast Division safety director, received the Patriot Award for his unwavering support of a wide-range of measures including flexible schedules, time off prior to and after training, caring for families, and granting leaves of absence if needed. Josh Foster, Shelly Northeast Division assistant safety director, nominated Russell and helped with presenting the award.

incidents. Words like impossible, never, and can’t come to mind. Nobody Gets Hurt has been a phrase that we’ve used to help convey the ZERO incidents goal for a few years now.

The Shelly Company introduced a new safety program in 2016 that will help us reach ZERO incidents, by increasing awareness and employee engagement at all locations: Full Circle of Safety whiteboards for T5 discussions.

Last August, The Shelly Company undertook a Safety Opinion Survey of all of our employees and created teams from each business unit to review the results and offer suggestions for improvement of our safety culture. One of the suggestions that all of our teams agreed on was using a whiteboard to conduct and record their morning T5 discussions. Whiteboards were distributed to several foremen as a trial last fall and produced productive results.

At the Shelly safety team’s Best Practices meeting last winter, Scott Oberholzer, safety director for the Ready Mix team, introduced the idea of the Full Circle of Safety, a way to use whiteboards to help each crew focus on their individual tasks and successfully complete the day with zero incidents. The Shelly safety team created pie chart decals for the whiteboards illustrating the Full Circle of Safety and added reminders on the board for our Fundamentals for Fatality Elimination and the Risks That Kill.

The post FULL CIRCLE OF SAFETY appeared first on The Shelly Company.
