About 600 guests and Maumee community members attended The Shelly Company’s Stoneco Maumee Open House on August 17, 2019. One goal of the open house is to educate the public about limestone quarries and Shelly operations. Guests took a bus tour of the quarry, cracked geodes, adopted pet rocks and visited a geology station. Other activities included a “touch a truck” display of quarry equipment and a “Guess how many tons?” game that invited visitors to guess how many tons of limestone Maumee quarry sold in 2018. A cookout-style lunch of hamburgers, hotdogs, beans, chips and cookies was served.

Thank you to all of the volunteers who made this successful event possible! We are also grateful to State Representative Michael Sheehy and Maumee Chief of Police, David Tullis, for taking time to stop in and say hello. The Maumee quarry crew is looking forward to another fun event next year.

The post Third Annual Maumee Open House appeared first on The Shelly Company.

The Shelly Company’s Ready Mix Division hosted its 5th Annual Awards Banquet in March, 2019 to recognize and celebrate excellence in safety, innovation and leadership. A total of 11 individuals received awards, along with 23 departments that went an entire year with zero incidents. This year’s banquet marked the inauguration of the Ready Mix Division Hall of Fame, the highest honor a ready mix division employee can earn. “The Hall of Fame was created to recognize employees who serve, or have served as stewards for the company, the ready mix industry and their fellow employees. This year, four individuals were inducted into the Hall of Fame, including two who were recognized posthumously,” said Dick Wilson, VP & GM, Ready Mix Division at The Shelly Company.

The post Ready Mix Division Creates Hall of Fame appeared first on The Shelly Company.

Shelly’s Southern Division earned the CRH Americas Materials World Class Safety Award for 2018.

The Shelly Southern team achieved a recordable incident rate of 0.18 while working 1,140,137 hours. The team had zero lost time incidents, one recordable injury, and drove 2,849,023 miles with zero preventable fleet incidents.

Former Shelly Safety Manager Mike Arnold was also honored with a safety award – Safety Director of the Year. In a message from CRH Americas Materials President, Randy Lake, the following was said about Arnold:

“Being a leader not only takes courage, but also the ability to motivate others, improve performance, and get results. Safety Mike’s drive and enthusiasm for safety helped the Southern Division achieve its best safety performance year, to date. Beneath his outgoing, jovial personality is a person who cares deeply about the safety of others and the success of the company. He came into a program that needed someone exactly like him. His ability to get everyone excited about safety was never a message of something that needs to be done – he made you want to be safe and do things correctly. With Safety Mike’s direction, the Southern Division was able to implement many processes from his light-hearted memes in his Weekly Safety Report to implementing and highlighting a weekly 5-S project, bringing the Southern Division to where it is today.”

In December 2018, Safety Mike accepted a new position for CRH’s Texas Materials as its new Regional Safety Director.

Congratulations to Shelly’s Southern Division and Safety Mike!

The two-year tunnel project at Shelly’s limestone quarry in Ostrander, OH has successfully opened. The tunnel provides a safe access way for Shelly’s haul trucks transporting aggregates to its processing plant. Shelly representatives collaborated with local government officials and regulatory departments on every step of the process.

On Friday, June 15, Shelly hosted a small ceremony to recognize the tunnel and show appreciation for everyone’s efforts. There were around 30 people in attendance including local county officials and community members. In addition there was representation from Ohio Department of Transportation, Ohio Department of Natural Resources and Ohio Aggregates and Industrial Minerals Association.

“Our team at The Shelly Company is committed to providing superior quality aggregate while maintaining community partnership,” said Shelly Aggregates Operations Manager, Mike Matoszkia. “This tunnel project is one more example of that commitment.”

The Shelly Company has been a longtime member of the Ostrander community and continues to support the community. It hosts several school visits at its quarry and community events at its wildlife habitat site. More information can be found under our community section on

It is common to get caught up in the fast-paced world we live in today.

The construction paving industry is no different. There are several moving parts and a strong focus is a daily requirement. But among all of the excitement and energy, there is still a human aspect that we all wish to maintain and uphold.

That’s why when we received a letter from a local business owner, we knew we had to share it. It’s a reminder of the impact we have on each another.

We are grateful of the feedback and proud of our team members.

Rocks Build Our World program is an elementary-focused program that brings the quarry to the classroom. Shelly representatives visited Mill Valley Elementary on May 7 and introduced the new program to three third grade classes.

The hands-on interactive program exposes students to the real-life elements of working in a quarry and producing aggregates through presentation, activities and fun-learning videos. Students tried on safety vests, hard hats and safety glasses, sang along to catchy aggregates’ melodies and finished with cookie mining. The program is also geared towards earth and science curriculum discussing types of rocks and the rock cycle.

On the following day, the 71 students and teachers visited Shelly’s Ostrander quarry and wildlife habitat site. There they saw firsthand what they had learned about the day before. Shelly hopes the two-day experience sheds a new light for the students about the aggregates industry and encourages more engagement and opportunities down the road.

On Friday, July 28th, The Shelly Company proudly celebrated its further growing internship program.

The internship program started in June and will run through mid-August. This program is designed for college students in fields of study relating to the construction building materials industry and the business world. The interns received a hands-on approach in many different areas of this well-rounded company. From Accounting and Sales to Mining and Construction, the interns were mentored through many real-life tasks and were given opportunities to showcase their talents.

Growing from 2016, The Shelly Company had a total of 16 interns enrolled this summer with each participating in numerous projects and proposals. Aside from the daily tasks many interns were welcomed to sit in on business meetings such as the online marketing committee and attended community events. Many volunteered time towards the Habitat for Humanity builds and for Open Houses happening across the state.

To wrap-up the program, The Shelly Company hosted a final luncheon this past Friday, July 28th. During the luncheon interns gave presentations to senior management including Ty Nofziger, Shelly President; Milan Andrin, Shelly CFO; and Gordon Jantzen, Shelly Vice President Human Resources.

The post 2017 Shelly Intern Wrap-Up Luncheon appeared first on The Shelly Company.

Throughout the visit, teachers interacted with The Shelly Company, Wampum Hardware and Sauls Seismic employees, discussing quarry and safety protocols, the importance of seismographs, the control on the vibrations and much more.

Prior to coming, Project STONE offered a contest involving an aggregates mining equation and the prize being the person selected to push the detonator releasing the extraction of rock. Andy Huddleston, Twin Valley South teacher, was the winner, and once safe and secure he was approved to press the button that created 25,000 tons of limestone.

Project Stone is a nationally recognized, award winning professional teachers workshop created by Wright State University’s Departments of Earth and Environmental Sciences and Teacher Education, in collaboration with the Ohio Aggregates and Industrial Minerals Association and the Ohio Board of Regents.

Our Nation has relied heavily on Guard and Reserve Service members since entering continuous operations more than 14 years ago. Employer support enhances retention rates in the Armed Forces and, in the end, strengthens our national security. To recognize employers who support their Guard and Reserve employees, ESGR grants a series of Department of Defense awards. On Nov 14, Russell Sherman, Shelly Northeast Division safety director, received the Patriot Award for his unwavering support of a wide-range of measures including flexible schedules, time off prior to and after training, caring for families, and granting leaves of absence if needed. Josh Foster, Shelly Northeast Division assistant safety director, nominated Russell and helped with presenting the award.

incidents. Words like impossible, never, and can’t come to mind. Nobody Gets Hurt has been a phrase that we’ve used to help convey the ZERO incidents goal for a few years now.

The Shelly Company introduced a new safety program in 2016 that will help us reach ZERO incidents, by increasing awareness and employee engagement at all locations: Full Circle of Safety whiteboards for T5 discussions.

Last August, The Shelly Company undertook a Safety Opinion Survey of all of our employees and created teams from each business unit to review the results and offer suggestions for improvement of our safety culture. One of the suggestions that all of our teams agreed on was using a whiteboard to conduct and record their morning T5 discussions. Whiteboards were distributed to several foremen as a trial last fall and produced productive results.

At the Shelly safety team’s Best Practices meeting last winter, Scott Oberholzer, safety director for the Ready Mix team, introduced the idea of the Full Circle of Safety, a way to use whiteboards to help each crew focus on their individual tasks and successfully complete the day with zero incidents. The Shelly safety team created pie chart decals for the whiteboards illustrating the Full Circle of Safety and added reminders on the board for our Fundamentals for Fatality Elimination and the Risks That Kill.

The post FULL CIRCLE OF SAFETY appeared first on The Shelly Company.

The Shelly Company, an Oldcastle company, 2016 intern program started in June and ran through mid-August. It is designed for college students majoring in fields of study related to the construction building materials industry. Shelly management and team members provided them with real-life insights into the types of opportunities available across the diverse facets of the company.

The 11 interns had an in-depth exposure to a variety of departments — from maintenance to quality control, safety, community, planning, R&D and beyond — designed to help these students with an advantage of learning outside the text books.

“Our goal was to implement a quality program to exceed the typical summer internship and really engage these eager, talented young people, “said Ty Nofziger, president The Shelly Company. “More than just offering a paid summer position, this program brings these young people into our organization and provides them the opportunity to attain deep understanding about the company in a short timeframe.”

The Shelly Company Summer 2016 interns include:

Andrew Miller (Cedarville College – Accounting)

Evan Sanders ( Bowling Green University – Construction)

Tyler Grant (Penn State – Aggregates)

Enzo Cannata (Penn State – Aggregates)

Brendan Masterson (University of Akron – Construction)

Alexander Jones (University of Akron – Construction)

Bowe Andrews (Georgia Tech – Sales)

Aaron Franklin (Eastern Kentucky University – Finance)

Audrey Karhoff (University of Kentucky – Public Relations)

Hunter McGhee (Virginia Tech – Aggregates)

Trent Grassbaugh (Ohio State University –Construction)

Beyond the on-site work, their experiences also included participating in Shelly meetings like the online marketing committee and Shelly technology group as well as community events and appreciation luncheons.

In closing, the interns gave presentations covering their experience and what they learned at the Findlay office to senior management including Ty Nofziger, Shelly President; Milan Andrin, Shelly CFO; Steve Conklin, vice president and general manager Northeast Division; Lyle Snyder, vice president and general manager Northwest Division; and Steve Draper, Shelly Safety Director.

Shelly’s intern program has evolved over the years and continues to grow. If you know of someone who would be interested to participate in the Shelly internship program contact Human Resources or email myfuture@nullshellyco.com.

The post College students gain real-life knowledge through summer intern program appeared first on The Shelly Company.

On July 28, approximately 20 Japanese delegates including students, chaperones and interpreters from Minamiawaji, Japan toured the Stoneco Celina quarry. Quarry representatives and management team members including third-party Wampum Hardware were well-prepared with informative presentations, activities, lunch and souvenirs.

“We were delighted to be a part of this memorable experience,” said Lyle Snyder, vice president and general manager The Shelly Company. “Our open door policy encourages safe and supervised trips for all ages. Our employees work hard to execute a meaningful agenda leaving community members with a better understanding of limestone mining and how it impacts our quality of life,” said Snyder.

The Stoneco Celina quarry was one of several stops for the overseas guests during their week-long visit to Mercer County. Robin Kraner, Stoneco quality control technician, organized and coordinated the trip. The tour was made possible thanks to the Grand Lake International Association’s (GLIA) 20th anniversary and sister-city program. GLIA coordinates the lodging with host families and touring businesses, restaurants, government facilities, schools and other sites.

GLIA was originally founded in 1993 as the Celina International Association to offer social, educational and cultural interaction between the youth of Celina and other countries, and now oversees the student exchange program.

The post Japanese exchange students tour the Stoneco Celina quarry during their visit to Mercer County appeared first on The Shelly Company.

On May 14 Oldcastle Materials’ North Division hosted an educational event for 61 Boy Scouts and over 30 adult leaders at the Stoneco of Michigan, Ottawa Lake Quarry.

For the second year in a row Stoneco of Michigan and The Shelly Company teamed up for an event that allows Boy Scouts to earn their Mining in Society Merit Badge. The Scouts earned their badges by learning the importance of mining within society and practicing personal and environmental safety.

Throughout the morning Scouts were taught the mining process, costs of materials, and how mining companies explore, plan, permit, mine and process minerals. The attendees were invited on a tour of the Ottawa Lake Limestone Quarry to provide a visual of the mining process.

In order for the Scouts to earn their badges, there were multiple interactive demonstrations. The demonstrations included a mapping exercise, quality control tests, and how both companies use drones to perform aerial surveys to measure stockpiles and mining faces. The Scouts also learned about construction aggregate materials that are needed to build roads and homes.

A troop leader stated, “The four boys that I brought to your merit badge class really enjoyed it and said on the way home that they previously had no clue what was all involved with mining. So keep up the good work and continue with this class for future scouts.”

The post Local Boy Scouts Earn Mining in Society Merit Badges appeared first on The Shelly Company.

It’s that time again for the fourth annual Outstanding Community Ambassador awards program open to all Shelly employees. These awards honor employees who have set an example for all of us with service and commitment to their communities. Most often their efforts are done out of sight and without any expectation of recognition. They get involved because they have a passion to help others. These community awards give us a chance to recognize those efforts and to encourage others by sharing their stories. If you would like to nominate a Shelly employee please contact Jessica Marcum for details at jmarcum@nulloldcastlematerials.com.

The post Nominate a Shelly employee today! appeared first on The Shelly Company.
