The Shelly Company, an Oldcastle company, 2016 intern program started in June and ran through mid-August. It is designed for college students majoring in fields of study related to the construction building materials industry. Shelly management and team members provided them with real-life insights into the types of opportunities available across the diverse facets of the company.

The 11 interns had an in-depth exposure to a variety of departments — from maintenance to quality control, safety, community, planning, R&D and beyond — designed to help these students with an advantage of learning outside the text books.

“Our goal was to implement a quality program to exceed the typical summer internship and really engage these eager, talented young people, “said Ty Nofziger, president The Shelly Company. “More than just offering a paid summer position, this program brings these young people into our organization and provides them the opportunity to attain deep understanding about the company in a short timeframe.”

The Shelly Company Summer 2016 interns include:

Andrew Miller (Cedarville College – Accounting)

Evan Sanders ( Bowling Green University – Construction)

Tyler Grant (Penn State – Aggregates)

Enzo Cannata (Penn State – Aggregates)

Brendan Masterson (University of Akron – Construction)

Alexander Jones (University of Akron – Construction)

Bowe Andrews (Georgia Tech – Sales)

Aaron Franklin (Eastern Kentucky University – Finance)

Audrey Karhoff (University of Kentucky – Public Relations)

Hunter McGhee (Virginia Tech – Aggregates)

Trent Grassbaugh (Ohio State University –Construction)

Beyond the on-site work, their experiences also included participating in Shelly meetings like the online marketing committee and Shelly technology group as well as community events and appreciation luncheons.

In closing, the interns gave presentations covering their experience and what they learned at the Findlay office to senior management including Ty Nofziger, Shelly President; Milan Andrin, Shelly CFO; Steve Conklin, vice president and general manager Northeast Division; Lyle Snyder, vice president and general manager Northwest Division; and Steve Draper, Shelly Safety Director.

Shelly’s intern program has evolved over the years and continues to grow. If you know of someone who would be interested to participate in the Shelly internship program contact Human Resources or email myfuture@nullshellyco.com.

The post College students gain real-life knowledge through summer intern program appeared first on The Shelly Company.

On July 28, approximately 20 Japanese delegates including students, chaperones and interpreters from Minamiawaji, Japan toured the Stoneco Celina quarry. Quarry representatives and management team members including third-party Wampum Hardware were well-prepared with informative presentations, activities, lunch and souvenirs.

“We were delighted to be a part of this memorable experience,” said Lyle Snyder, vice president and general manager The Shelly Company. “Our open door policy encourages safe and supervised trips for all ages. Our employees work hard to execute a meaningful agenda leaving community members with a better understanding of limestone mining and how it impacts our quality of life,” said Snyder.

The Stoneco Celina quarry was one of several stops for the overseas guests during their week-long visit to Mercer County. Robin Kraner, Stoneco quality control technician, organized and coordinated the trip. The tour was made possible thanks to the Grand Lake International Association’s (GLIA) 20th anniversary and sister-city program. GLIA coordinates the lodging with host families and touring businesses, restaurants, government facilities, schools and other sites.

GLIA was originally founded in 1993 as the Celina International Association to offer social, educational and cultural interaction between the youth of Celina and other countries, and now oversees the student exchange program.

The post Japanese exchange students tour the Stoneco Celina quarry during their visit to Mercer County appeared first on The Shelly Company.

On May 14 Oldcastle Materials’ North Division hosted an educational event for 61 Boy Scouts and over 30 adult leaders at the Stoneco of Michigan, Ottawa Lake Quarry.

For the second year in a row Stoneco of Michigan and The Shelly Company teamed up for an event that allows Boy Scouts to earn their Mining in Society Merit Badge. The Scouts earned their badges by learning the importance of mining within society and practicing personal and environmental safety.

Throughout the morning Scouts were taught the mining process, costs of materials, and how mining companies explore, plan, permit, mine and process minerals. The attendees were invited on a tour of the Ottawa Lake Limestone Quarry to provide a visual of the mining process.

In order for the Scouts to earn their badges, there were multiple interactive demonstrations. The demonstrations included a mapping exercise, quality control tests, and how both companies use drones to perform aerial surveys to measure stockpiles and mining faces. The Scouts also learned about construction aggregate materials that are needed to build roads and homes.

A troop leader stated, “The four boys that I brought to your merit badge class really enjoyed it and said on the way home that they previously had no clue what was all involved with mining. So keep up the good work and continue with this class for future scouts.”

The post Local Boy Scouts Earn Mining in Society Merit Badges appeared first on The Shelly Company.

It’s that time again for the fourth annual Outstanding Community Ambassador awards program open to all Shelly employees. These awards honor employees who have set an example for all of us with service and commitment to their communities. Most often their efforts are done out of sight and without any expectation of recognition. They get involved because they have a passion to help others. These community awards give us a chance to recognize those efforts and to encourage others by sharing their stories. If you would like to nominate a Shelly employee please contact Jessica Marcum for details at jmarcum@nulloldcastlematerials.com.

The post Nominate a Shelly employee today! appeared first on The Shelly Company.

A young man named Brock “B-rock” Johnson was just 14 years old when a very rare auto immune disorder took his life. The young Canal Winchester, Ohio native endured over 25 surgeries throughout his short, amazing life.

During his 14 years, he touched countless people, both locally and nationally. Since Brock’s passing a few months ago, his family continues to keep his memory alive. They are now in the process of starting a nonprofit called the Brockstrong Foundation.

When Shelly Materials was asked to donate a rock in memory of Brock (aka B-Rock), there was no hesitation. On August 14th, Brock’s parents, along with the Canal Winchester High School football head coach, visited the Columbus Limestone quarry to pick the “perfect” rock. Powers Trucking, another huge community supporter, provided the dump truck for transporting the rock to the High School.

How the rock will be used is still to be determined, but it is expected to become a solid foundation for the school and all those who loved Brock – to remember, never forget, and to be Brock Strong.

The Shelly Company welcomed 21 teachers representing various schools throughout Ohio to visit its Columbus Limestone quarry as a part of the 7th Annual Ohio Aggregates & Industrial Minerals Association (OAIMA) two-week program, Project STONE (Science Teaching Ohio’s New Economy). Through this program, teachers learn about the science aspect of the industry, and take their knowledge back to the classroom. This hands-on and informative program is sponsored by Wright State University, The Ohio Board of Regents, and OAIMA. This workshop enables OAIMA producing members to develop partnerships with local schools and give teachers the opportunity to incorporate real-life earth science into inquiry based science lessons.

The group’s visit involved safety training, a tour of the mine, and presentations from The Shelly Company, Sauls Seismic and Northern Ohio Explosives. Key takeaways for the teachers to take back to the classroom included simple but effective mining activities, interesting geology facts and exposure to the career opportunities within the mining industry. Project STONE is an annual program open to all teachers educating in Ohio’s classrooms. The program signups start in early spring. The spacing is limited. For more information about Project STONE please visit OAIMA.org.

The post 7th Annual Teachers Workshop appeared first on The Shelly Company.

With the help of Business and Volunteers United (BVU), The Shelly Company has teamed up with local nonprofit groups to help make a difference and pursue a greater involvement in addressing community concerns. “We take great pride in giving back to local communities and empowering our teams to support their neighbors in need. This spring, employees jumped into action to sign up and help out,” said Steve Conklin, Shelly Northeast Division General Manager and Vice President.

The Shelly Company Northeast Division started its community quest on May 2 with over 40 employees and family members who volunteered at Camp Ho Mita Koda, the oldest summer camp in the nation for children with diabetes. Shelly employees spent the day cleaning camp structures by scrubbing floors, washing windows, clearing hiking paths and stacking firewood for the expected 200 children to arrive within the next few weeks.

“It was an honor partnering with the Diabetes Partnership of Cleveland. It felt great spending the day at Camp Ho Mita Koda and working hard to make the young campers’ experience that much more enjoyable,” said Jason Emch, Shelly aggregates operations manager. “I am looking forward to the next projects to come.”

The Shelly Company Northeast Division has three more “Done-In-A-Day” projects to complete before the end of the year. Thanks to BVU, the upcoming projects are scheduled and plans are well underway.

The post Northeast Ohio to receive volunteer help from The Shelly Company appeared first on The Shelly Company.

The company’s tuition-reimbursement program offers employees the chance to further their educational experience.

The Shelly Company Ready Mix Division in Dover, Ohio held their second annual outstanding achievements banquet at the Dutch Valley Restaurant, on Friday, Jan. 15. Employees and management team members enjoyed a sit-down family-style lunch event followed by an awards ceremony. Oldcastle Materials Central Division President, John Powers; Shelly Ready Mix Vice President and General Manager, Dick Wilson; Shelly Vice President and General Counsel, David Kern; and Shelly Safety Director, Steve Draper, presented attendees with awards for going above and beyond.
The award categories were: Safety Plant Award of Excellence, zero incidents occurred; Safety Individual Award of Excellence, most points earned; Spirit Award of Excellence, extraordinary goodwill and professionalism performed; Pride Award of Excellence, personal ownership displayed; and Safety Champion of the Year, personal contribution impacted safety results.
The event concluded with a special award, Leader of the Year, that recognized outstanding individual optimism, leadership, and positive growth for the Division and Company. This year, that honor went to Rick Kemper, Smith Concrete General Manager. Rick’s 23 years of service at The Shelly Company continues to promote growth and provide opportunities. Most recently, Rick has participated in: Driver Mentor Training Committee, Oldcastle Ready Mix Hiring/Training Committee, Shelly Ready Mix Safety Committee, National Plant Optimization Committee and Plant Optimization for Shelly Ready Mix, and Shelly Hiring/Retention Committee.
“Receiving the Leader of the Year is such a great honor,” said Rick. “When I think about all of the talented and passionate employees, it just makes the honor that much more special.” According to Rick, regardless of your role, if you want to be a great leader, remember to treat all people with respect at all times. You never know when you’ll need their help, and it’s a sign you respect people, which all great leaders do.
The Shelly Ready Mix Division hosts the awards banquet in a central location for the Shelly Ready Mix companies: All Ohio Ready Mix, Medina Supply, and Smith Concrete. “This is my favorite event of the year,” said Dick Wilson, Division Vice President and General Manager. “Creating a safe work environment is much more meaningful when it comes, not just from one person, but from the joint achievements of many! I am very proud to be a part of such a passionate group of people!”

It looked like a scene out of a Special Forces movie. Camouflaged police officers with weapons in arm stood in the shadows scoping out the land. As they were given the signal, they raided an abandoned house and two barns in hopes to seize and capture the two suspects reportedly hiding on the property.

No it wasn’t a movie, but a supervised training exercise hosted by the City of Marysville Police Department and Deputy Chief Bo Spain. Safety precautions were in place – including weapons minus the ammunition.

The training exercise is one of many for officers of diverse years of service to gain additional experience and exposure. The Shelly Company provided property near its Ostrander limestone quarry for the day’s activities. According to Deputy Chief Bo Spain, unfamiliar land offers the best training as the team has to rely on their skills to navigate through the scenery and complete the three exercises: clearing, extracting and negotiating.

The Shelly Company partners with local emergency services and law enforcement agencies to assist with training opportunities associated with real-life situations. Shelly has provided training opportunities for local enforcement and emergency groups such as city bomb squads, fire departments, police departments and dive and rescue teams for many years. “It’s The Shelly Company’s way of giving back to the community, “said Jamie Sturgeon, public relations manager. Shelly’s plant managers are the company contacts with the agency members. After the trainings are complete, we continue the relationship by inviting them to Shelly quarry events such as open houses and community days.

The post Shelly provides land for hostage training appeared first on The Shelly Company.

Flow Control magazine recently announced its 2014 Innovation Awards winners for their technological contributions to industrial fluid handling systems, resulting in increased process efficiency, cost savings, energy savings and more. Fox Thermal Instruments was included within the award list for its Model FT2A thermal mass flow meter currently installed at The Shelly Company’s Gallipolis asphalt plant. “The meter has been instrumental in determining our true drying costs, said Trevor Small,” area manager. Jeff Conover, OMG asphalt performance manager, worked with Fox Thermal Instruments to develop a web page for remote access to the meter. This Ethernet IP feature enables the plant manager to view the meter readings from the control house via the touch screen panel eliminating the need for the loader operator to manually read the meter. Essentially the meter can be read from any location through Internet login. This new technology has helped to improve plant performance and determine inefficiencies. The Shelly Company is proud to be one of the first companies to use the FT2A thermal mass flow meter.

The post Asphalt Plant Meter Wins Innovation Award appeared first on The Shelly Company.

On Wednesday, Aug. 27, The Shelly Company’s liquid terminal and asphalt plant in Gallipolis, Ohio, took part in the Ohio Chamber’s Road to Prosperity summer road tour by hosting Chamber representatives and Sen. Bob Peterson, to discuss key issues facing the construction and building materials industry. “I appreciated visiting and learning more about The Shelly Company”, said Peterson. “I enjoyed discussing ways to strengthen the business climate in Ohio and growing jobs and our economy.”

“It was an honor to have the Ohio Chamber of Commerce and Sen. Bob Peterson visit us for a few hours to discuss firsthand the issues our business is facing, as well as taking time to tour our facilities,” said Trevor Small, Shelly area manager. “Keeping up with Ohio’s infrastructure is critical to our communities and our society’s quality of life. Our asphalt paving is designed and mixed in-state, incorporating Ohio aggregates and recycled Ohio pavement along with other recycled products, heated on-site and laid down by Ohio workers.”

The Gallipolis asphalt plant is one of Shelly’s 37 asphalt plants throughout Ohio. It is expected to produce enough tons to meet market demands for state and local roadwork projects. A robust highway funding bill is critical to ensure infrastructure needs are met. Highway funding supports Ohio’s economy and provides jobs for Ohio families.

“We are appreciative of the Ohio Chamber of Commerce’s summer road tour and the opportunity to showcase our facility as well as share our concerns,” said Rick Van Gundy, Shelly liquid terminal manager. “We take great pride in running a safe and efficient site.”

Currently, Shelly is experiencing a shortage of qualified and available drivers and contract carriers to transport materials externally throughout most lines of business. Bulk, haul and ready mix concrete drivers are only some of the driving positions needed to be filled. Unfortunately, the present shortage is expected to get worse before it gets better.

“We appreciate The Shelly Company for hosting our Road to Prosperity tour and for sharing these pertinent issues with us,” said Keith Lake, Vice President of Government Affairs at the Ohio Chamber of Commerce. “Their input on issues facing Ohio businesses is paramount to helping us fulfill our mission to advocate for the business community. These problems are likely to affect other businesses as well since The Shelly Company’s business is related to key aspects of infrastructure, which is essentially how employees and raw materials travel to businesses, and how finished goods reach customers. Good infrastructure in Ohio is critical to business.”

The Gallipolis liquid terminal just celebrated 2,922 days without an incident. It consists of 13 steel constructed tanks and is one of Shelly’s four terminals throughout Ohio.

The post Ohio Chamber of Commerce Visits Shelly's Gallipolis Sites appeared first on The Shelly Company.

The Shelly Company is excited to welcome Josh to our team. Josh joined The Shelly Company on August 31 as Shelly’s Northeast and Northwest Divisions Human Resources Manager. He brings over 13 years of human resources experience in the trucking and manufacturing industries. Prior to working in the private industry, Josh was a member of the United States Army where he held a variety of human resources positions. Josh’s strong background in recruiting, employee relations, compliance and training will definitely come in handy. He is a graduate of Tiffin University with a Bachelors of Business Administration in Organizational Management.

Learn more about Josh through his own words below:

What do you like best about Human Resources?

I enjoy the day to day challenges and of course the people, but most of all I enjoy being part of something bigger, such as working in teams to make the right decisions and creating positive changes. I like the ability to think outside the box to solve employee and business issues.

What is one of your most memorable HR encounters?

My first encounter that brings a smile is difficult to put a finger on. There are too many HR situations or events that bring a smile. I would have to say that serving as a recruiter in the military brought a tremendous amount of joy. More, specifically, to those who were in need of opportunities due to family hardships or dealt a difficult hand in life.

What do you love doing when you are not at work?

I enjoy spending time with my family. I also enjoy as much golf as I can get, watching football, working on home projects, and volunteering for faith-based community events when time allows.

What do you hope to bring to The Shelly Company?

I hope to bring to Shelly an added strategy and different point of view to solving employment issues. I want to engage employees and management towards continued employment satisfaction at Shelly and instill confidence and trust in HR.

The post Welcome Josh Clark appeared first on The Shelly Company.

One of the greatest advantages to pouring concrete is you can do it all year long. However, as the seasons change so does the necessary steps to ensure quality results. Summer is no exception, and as the heat indexes rise, follow the below guidelines to decrease your chances of hot weather issues for a successful finish.

Coordination between the designer, ready mix supplier, testing laboratory, and contractor are critical for successful hot weather concreting. Hot weather can be defined as any combination of high ambient temperature, high concrete temperature, low relative humidity, high wind speed, and excessive solar radiation. Hot weather conditions can produce a rapid rate of evaporation of moisture from the surface of the concrete and accelerated setting time, among other issues. Concrete that is cured at high temperatures at an early age will not be as strong at 28 days as the same concrete cured at temperatures around 70 degrees.

The key to successful hot weather concreting is:

1.Recognizing the factors that can affect concrete

2. Plan to help minimize those factors

Use of water reducing, set retarding and supplementary cementitious admixtures can aid in reducing the effects that hot weather has on concrete. Concrete temperatures can also be lowered by using ice or chilled water as part of the mixing water.

When possible, deliveries should be scheduled to avoid the hottest part of the day and delays in delivery, placing and finishing are essential. Trucks should be able to discharge immediately and adequate personnel should be ready to place and handle the concrete. When dealing with hot weather concreting, advance planning and communication can prevent concrete issues. Preventing issues before they start can result in concrete that is of greater durability and higher quality.

High school proms create lasting memories for young people, but they also can create a financial burden. The Shelly Co.’s Northwest Division takes away some of that “sticker shock” through its annual Don’t Stress Over the Dress event, which provides donated special-occasion dresses to girls planning to attend school proms.

The sixth annual event, held March 7-9 at the Findlay Village Mall, was attended by more than 300 girls from 65 schools in Ohio. It was presented by the Shelly Northwest Division’s Community Action Committee in partnership with Chopin Hall and the mall.

“I have attended the ‘Don’t Stress Over the Dress’ event and was impressed by not only the turnout but also the impact the event has on the young ladies in need,” said Lyle Snyder, general manager and vice president of The Shelly Co. Northwest Division. “The event has grown over the years, and the local mall consistently asks the group to extend their offerings to multiple weekends due to the positive response from the community.

“I want to thank all the volunteers for their hard work throughout the year preparing for and running this event.”

More than 630 gowns — as well as a variety of shoes, jewelry and makeup — were donated for the free event. More than 40 local businesses also donated gift certificates for hair and nail services, flowers, tuxedo rentals and restaurants that were used for door prizes.

“We were very happy to give away 178 dresses this year,” said Chris Edwards, a Shelly Northwest Division employee and member of the Community Action Committee. “There are already enough financial burdens on families nowadays, and prom shouldn’t be one of them.”

The Shelly Company Northwest Division Community Action Committee members: Christie Saltzman, Denise Foley, Kim Dennis, Dawn Murray, Chris Edwards, Joyce Thomas, Shara Asmus, Stacey Walton, Naomi Finn, Robin Kraner, Julie Fuller, Shelly VanAtta, Lori Burket and Marti Price, Chopin Hall.

Anyone interested in donating should contact the Shelly Northwest Division office at (419) 422-8854.

The post Shelly’s annual dress event helps make prom a reality appeared first on The Shelly Company.

The Shelly Company walked away with close to 40 awards recognizing highest-quality asphalt pavement and asphalt facilities at NAPA’s annual meeting in Boca Raton, Fla., on Feb. 5.

“It was a very proud moment for The Shelly Company and Oldcastle Materials. Quality is one of Shelly’s three core values and critical to our long-term success, said Ty Nofziger, Shelly Company president. It takes commitment on all levels to be this successful at the national level. Congratulations are well deserved to all of our team members involved. The Shelly Company sets the highest-standards when it comes to quality paving, and continues to make us the industry leader that we are!”

The Shelly Co., which won the 2012 Sheldon G. Hayes Award for its milling and overlay work on I-70, was a finalist for the 2013 award as well. The finalist project was a major resurfacing of I-76 in Portage County. The $7.2 million project involved bridge overlays, drainage work, and milling and resurfacing of two rest areas.

Two milling crews removed and recycled 30,000 tons of asphalt, and two paving crews placed 68,000 tons of new asphalt. The crews earned 94 percent ($106,000) of a potential $112,500 smoothness initiative for the project.

“We are extremely proud to have been nominated for this award,” said Steve Conklin, vice president and general manager of The Shelly Co.’s Northeast Division. “The exceptional work by our employees who bid, produce, test and build high-quality projects year after year is nothing new, but receiving national recognition supports their efforts and dedication to our industry.”

The Shelly Co. has won two gold awards for community relations excellence through the National Stone, Sand and Gravel (NSSGA) awards program. The awards program recognizes aggregates operations throughout the United States and Canada for their extraordinary commitment to safety, for their superior performance as environmental stewards and for their community involvement and support activities that have enhanced the image of the aggregates industry during 2012-2013.

“It is an outstanding achievement to win two gold awards in community relations and to be recognized for our outreach in this area, especially when you consider the importance to our industry of maintaining strong relationships with the communities we serve,” said Ty Nofziger, president of The Shelly Company. “Being a good neighbor is one of our four pillars of corporate social responsibility. Our employees volunteer countless hours toward enhancing the communities in which we work and live. It is an honor to earn this recognition at the national level.”
